Divākara namastubhyam prabhākara namo’stu te
Ādideva – primordial deity, namastubhyam – salutations to you, prasīda – be pleased, mama – to me, bhāskara – giver of light, Divākara – maker of the day, prabhākara – spreader of radiance, namo’stu te – salutations to you.
Salutations to you, O Primordial Deity, O Bhāskara! Be pleased with me. Salutations again to you, O Divākara, the one who brings daylight and radiance.
Saptāśva-ratha-mārūḍhaṁ pracaṇḍaṁ kaśyapātmajam
Śveta-padma-dharaṁ devaṁ taṁ sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham
Saptāśva – seven horses, ratha-mārūḍhaṁ – riding a chariot, pracaṇḍaṁ – blazing/intense, kaśyapātmajam – son of Sage Kaśyapa, śveta-padma-dharam – holder of white lotus, devaṁ – the divine, taṁ – that, sūryaṁ – Sūrya, praṇamāmi – I bow, aham – I.
I bow to Lord Sūrya, the son of Kaśyapa, riding a chariot drawn by seven horses, holding a white lotus, and blazing with intense radiance.
Lohitaṁ ratha-mārūḍhaṁ sarva-loka-pitāmaham
Mahā-pāpa-haraṁ devaṁ taṁ sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham
Lohitaṁ – red-hued, ratha-mārūḍhaṁ – mounted on a chariot, sarva-loka-pitāmaham – grandfather of all worlds, mahā-pāpa-haram – remover of great sins, devaṁ – the divine one, taṁ – that, sūryaṁ – Sūrya, praṇamāmi – I bow, aham – I.
I bow to Lord Sūrya, red in color, riding his chariot, the grandfather of all worlds, and the remover of great sins.
Traiguṇyaṁ ca mahāśūraṁ brahma-viṣṇu-maheśvaram
Mahā-pāpa-haraṁ devaṁ taṁ sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham
Traiguṇyaṁ – possessing the three qualities (sattva, rajas, tamas), mahāśūraṁ – very valiant, brahma-viṣṇu-maheśvaram – essence of Brahma, Viṣṇu, and Maheśa, mahā-pāpa-haram – remover of great sins, devaṁ – the divine one, taṁ – that, sūryaṁ – Sūrya, praṇamāmi – I bow, aham – I.
I bow to Lord Sūrya, who embodies all three qualities, the essence of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, a great warrior and the remover of immense sins.
Bṛṁhitaṁ tejasāṁ puñjaṁ vāyu-ākāśam-eva ca
Prabhuṁ ca sarva-lokānāṁ taṁ sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham
Bṛṁhitaṁ – expanded, tejasāṁ puñjam – mass of brilliance, vāyu – air, ākāśam – space, eva ca – indeed also, prabhuṁ – lord, sarva-lokānāṁ – of all worlds, taṁ – that, sūryaṁ – Sūrya, praṇamāmi – I bow, aham – I.
I bow to Lord Sūrya, the expanded mass of light, who pervades the air and space and is the lord of all the worlds.
Bandhūka-puṣpa-saṅkāśaṁ hāra-kuṇḍala-bhūṣitam
Eka-cakra-dharaṁ devaṁ taṁ sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham
Bandhūka-puṣpa-saṅkāśaṁ – resembling the Bandhūka flower in color, hāra-kuṇḍala-bhūṣitam – adorned with garlands and earrings, eka-cakra-dharam – bearer of a single wheel (chariot), devaṁ – divine one, taṁ – that, sūryaṁ – Sūrya, praṇamāmi – I bow, aham – I.
I bow to Lord Sūrya, who shines like the red Bandhūka flower, is adorned with garlands and earrings, and rides a chariot with a single wheel.
Viśveśaṁ viśva-kartāraṁ mahā-tejaḥ-pradīpanam
Mahā-pāpa-haraṁ devaṁ taṁ sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham
Viśveśaṁ – Lord of the universe, viśva-kartāraṁ – creator of the universe, mahā-tejaḥ-pradīpanam – great light-illuminator, mahā-pāpa-haram – remover of great sins, devaṁ – divine one, taṁ – that, sūryaṁ – Sūrya, praṇamāmi – I bow, aham – I.
I bow to Lord Sūrya, the Lord and creator of the universe, the source of immense light, and the destroyer of great sins.
Taṁ sūryaṁ jagatāṁ nādhaṁ jñāna-vijñāna-mokṣadam
Mahā-pāpa-haraṁ devaṁ taṁ sūryaṁ praṇamāmyaham
Taṁ – that, sūryaṁ – Sūrya, jagatāṁ nādham – Lord of the universe, jñāna-vijñāna-mokṣadam – giver of knowledge, wisdom, and liberation, mahā-pāpa-haram – remover of great sins, devaṁ – divine one, praṇamāmi – I bow, aham – I.
I bow to that Sun God, the Lord of all beings, who grants knowledge, realization, and liberation, and removes great sins.
Sūryāṣṭakaṁ paṭhen nityaṁ graha-pīḍā-praṇāśanam
Aputro labhate putraṁ daridro dhanavān bhavet
Sūryāṣṭakaṁ – this hymn of eight verses to the Sun, paṭhet – recites, nityam – daily, graha-pīḍā – planetary afflictions, praṇāśanam – destroyer, aputraḥ – childless person, labhate – obtains, putram – son, daridraḥ – poor person, dhanavān – wealthy, bhavet – becomes.
Whoever recites the Sūryāṣṭakam daily will be freed from planetary afflictions; the childless will gain children, and the poor will become wealthy.
Āmiṣaṁ madhu-pānaṁ ca yaḥ karoti raverdine
Sapta-janma bhaved rogī janma-karma-daridratā
Āmiṣaṁ – meat, madhu-pānaṁ – drinking liquor, yaḥ – whoever, karoti – does, raverdine – on the day of the Sun (Sunday), sapta-janma – seven births, bhavet – becomes, rogī – diseased, janma-karma – birth and actions, daridratā – poverty.
Whoever eats meat or drinks alcohol on Sundays will be diseased for seven births and suffer poverty due to their birth and actions.
Strī taila madhu māṁsāni hastyajet tu raverdine
Na vyādhi śoka dāridryaṁ sūrya-lokaṁ sa gacchati
Strī – sexual pleasure, taila – oil application, madhu – liquor, māṁsāni – meats, hastyajet – should give up, raverdine – on the Sun’s day, na – not, vyādhi – disease, śoka – sorrow, dāridryaṁ – poverty, sūrya-lokaṁ – Sun’s abode, sa – he, gacchati – reaches.
One who avoids women, oil, alcohol, and meat on Sundays will be free from disease, sorrow, and poverty, and attain the realm of the Sun.
